Certified materials for Zero Energy Building
Interview of Argyris Andreou, president of the Panhellenic Association of Insulation Companies.
"Thermal insulation is the most important energy-saving work in a residence, since it results in an overwhelming reduction of the annual heating and electricity costs" , argues the president of the Panhellenic Association of Insulation Companies (PSEM), Argyris Andreou, in the dedication Energy Shielding of buildings.
In detail what A. Andreou said to SLpress:
What do you think of the goals for low energy efficiency buildings?
After the revision of the Regulation on the Energy Performance of Buildings (KENAK) and the drawing up of a national plan to increase the number of buildings with almost zero energy consumption, the implementation of the measures is underway and is expected to contribute to the improvement of the energy efficiency of buildings in Greece .
The ZEB (Zero Energy Building) is an extremely high energy efficiency building, whose almost zero or very low amount of energy required to meet its energy needs is covered to a very large extent by renewable energy sources (RES) in local level. To achieve this goal an energy efficient design is required: High performance insulation, RES systems and energy management technologies.
What does an insulating jacket mean for buildings and which are amenable to improvements – are there any conditions?
By the term insulating building envelope we mean the thermal insulation of a building in the roof and in the external masonry (thermal facade), which essentially reduces the transmission of heat to and from its interior. During the winter months it reduces the rate at which heat is lost from the building, while in the summer months it reduces the rate at which heat enters it. This has the result that the energy consumption, with which the various artificial systems for heating or cooling a space are fed, is reduced and at the same time the economic benefits for the resident are immediately perceived.
Of course, anyone who wants to proceed with interventions in order to achieve the most efficient energy upgrade of a building, should first take into account the main factors that cause thermal losses, such as for example the location, the orientation of the building in the surrounding area, the size of the surfaces that are directly exposed to weather conditions, in relation to the volume of the building and the type of openings it has (energy frames). Therefore, for the correct thermal insulation of a building, a series of factors related to the specific building should be considered.
What are the materials that contribute decisively to the energy shielding of buildings?
The choice of suitable building materials in the construction of a building with almost zero energy consumption is the most decisive factor. At the moment there is a wide range of materials available that can be chosen by the owner of the building, as long as they are certified by the current regulations and their application is carried out by certified workshops, an area in which the Panhellenic Association of Insulation Companies continuously invests with actions, which has been organizing since its inception almost until today.

How can thermal insulation contribute to upgrading the value of real estate and what innovations have changed the market in this area?
Thermal insulation is the most important energy-saving task in a residence, since it results in an overwhelming reduction in annual heating and electricity costs. Thus, every property that wants to be rented or sold is required by law to issue a Building Energy Performance Certificate.
The higher its rank, the lower its operating costs and consequently its value is upgraded. In recent years the market in the field of energy upgrading has been developing rapidly. New, integrated, certified systems and products have been created which offer high performance, speed, safety and flexibility.
What are the criteria for Zero Energy Buildings?
The ZEB (Zero Energy Building) is an extremely high energy efficiency building, whose almost zero or very low amount of energy required to meet its energy needs is covered to a very large extent by renewable energy sources (RES) in local level. Achieving this goal requires an energy-efficient design, high-performance insulation, RES systems and energy management technologies.
